An analysis of Kenny Burrell’s Improvisation on "Kenny Burrell and John Coltrane"

Abstract

This research studies jazz guitar performance of Kenny Burrell in hard bop era with objectives to examine and analyze jazz guitar improvisation of Kenny Burrell from Kenny Burrell and John Coltrane’s album. The researcher exercised methodology of documentary research by selecting samples with purposive sampling method. The samples were audio media in form of sound recording. The researcher transcribed notes in 5 songs including (1) Freight Trane, (2) I Never Knew, (3) Leresto, (4) Why Was I Born, and (5) Big Paul. Data were descriptively analyzed in support of the notes.

The findings revealed that Kenny Burrell improvised 5 songs by creating a phrase with motive development technique, arpeggio and melodic pattern, mode and scales. Additionally, re-harmonization was employed by adding chords, changing chord types and increasing chord extension for create a downward bass line and color that is different from the original one.

งานวิจัยนี้เป็นงานวิจัยเพื่อศึกษาการบรรเลงกีตาร์แจ๊สของเคนนี เบอร์เรลล์ ในยุคสมัยฮาร์ดบ็อพ โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาและวิเคราะห์การบรรเลงคีตปฏิภาณกีตาร์แจ๊สของ เคนนี เบอร์เรลล์ จากผลงานอัลบั้ม เคนนี เบอร์เรลล์และจอห์น โคลเทรน ผู้วิจัยใช้วิธีดำเนินการวิจัยรูปแบบการวิจัยเอกสาร โดยเลือกกลุ่มตัวอย่างแบบเจาะจง กลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นสื่อเสียงในรูปแบบการบันทึกเสียง ผู้วิจัยทำการถอดโน้ตประกอบด้วย 5 บทเพลง คือ (1) เฟรท เทรน (2) ไอ เนเวอร์ นูว (3) ลีเรสโต (4) วาย วอส ไอ บอร์น (5) บิ๊ก พอล และใช้การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลเชิงพรรณนาประกอบโน้ตเพลง

ผลศึกษาพบว่า เคนนี เบอร์เรลล์ ด้นสดใน 5 บทเพลงโดยใช้การสร้างประโยคด้วยเทคนิคโมทีฟ ดีเวลลอปเมนต์ การสร้างประโยคด้วยอาร์เปโจและเมโลดิกแพทเทิร์น การสร้างประโยคด้วยโมดและบันไดเสียง นอกจากนั้นยังพบการใช้รีฮาร์โมไนเซชันด้วยเทคนิคการเปลี่ยนคอร์ด ด้วยการเพิ่มคอร์ด การเปลี่ยนประเภทของคอร์ด และการเพิ่มส่วนขยายของคอร์ด เพื่อให้เกิดการเคลื่อนทำนองในแนวเบสและทำให้เกิดสีสันใหม่ที่แตกต่างจากบทเพลงเดิม
