SPACE AND BOUNDARY IN INSTALLATION ART OF KIM SOO-JA

Abstract

The thesis aims to present the concepts of art creations by South Korean female artist Kim Soo-ja that are related to spaces and historical events by studying and analyzing her installations within the context of Korean society and her journeys to various countries during that period. The scope of the study is from 1993 to 2018 when Kim Soo-Ja's art is engaged with the role of female artists in Korean society and it shows her views about the world.

From the study, it was found that Kim Soo-ja’s concepts of art creations during that period can be divided into 2 groups:

1. Artworks related to her identity and self

In this group, the artist’s works portray the role of women, her tie with the fabric, and the binary opposition. Those are influenced by her personal experiences.

2. Artworks related to significant events in the society

In this group, the artist reflects her personal feeling towards historical events in Korea and the world. She acknowledges the importance of humanity in an age of globalization.

Also, the artist has used medium and materials, for example, Bottari or the traditional wrapping cloth of Korea. In East Asian cultures, it reflects the idea of nation and the artist’s concept of travel and migration.

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มุ่งนำเสนอการศึกษาแนวคิดในการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานศิลปะที่มีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวข้องกับพื้นที่และเหตุการณ์ในประวัติศาสตร์ของคิมซูจา ศิลปินหญิงชาวเกาหลีใต้ ศึกษาและวิเคราะห์จากผลงานรูปแบบศิลปะจัดวาง รวมทั้งนำสภาพสังคมของเกาหลีและการเดินทางของศิลปินในหลายประเทศขณะนั้นมาศึกษาร่วมด้วย โดยทำการศึกษาจากผลงานศิลปะที่ทำขึ้นในช่วงระหว่าง ค.ศ. 1993-2018 ซึ่งเป็นช่วงระยะเวลาที่ผลงานศิลปะของคิมซูจามีความเกี่ยวข้องกับบทบาทของศิลปินหญิงในสังคมเกาหลี รวมทั้งการแสดงความคิดเห็นต่อสังคมโลก

จากการศึกษาพบว่าสามารถวิเคราะห์แนวคิดในการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานทั้งในช่วงระยะเวลาดังกล่าว แบ่งได้เป็น 2 แนวทาง คือ

1. ผลงานศิลปะที่เกี่ยวข้องกับอัตลักษณ์และตัวตน โดยผลงานในกลุ่มนี้จะเกี่ยวข้องกับการสร้างสรรค์งานของศิลปินที่แสดงถึงบทบาทของสตรี ความผูกพันกับผืนผ้า และแนวคิดคู่ตรงข้าม ที่เป็นผลจากประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวของศิลปิน

2. ผลงานศิลปะที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเหตุการณ์สำคัญในสังคม ในกลุ่มนี้ศิลปินได้สะท้อนความรู้สึกส่วนตัวต่อเหตุการณ์ในหน้าประวัติศาสตร์ของสังคมเกาหลีและสังคมโลก โดยตระหนักถึงความเป็นมนุษย์ในกระแสโลกาภิวัตน์

นอกจากนี้ศิลปินมีการใช้สื่อและวัสดุ เช่น โบตารีหรือห่อผ้า โดยเฉพาะในวัฒนธรรมเอเชียตะวันออก ทำให้สะท้อนความเป็นชาติ และความแนวคิดของศิลปินที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการเดินทาง อพยพย้ายถิ่นฐาน
