The Royal Attires and Decorative Ornaments on The Crowned Buddha in Late Ayutthaya Art

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study patterns and decorative ornaments appeared on the crowned Buddha in late Ayutthaya Period installed in temples and national museums in the authority of Fine Arts Department.

The study of The decorative ornaments of the royal attires in late Ayutthaya through the crowned Buddha, sculptures and relief sculptures, aimed to find out more decorative ornaments. It was found that the patterns of the attires on the crowned Buddha were inspired by the attires which exchanged and adjusted from another culture and resulted in the traditional attires appeared on late Ayutthaya painting which consisted of head ornament (pointed-crown), earring (pointed earring), ear-cuff, necklace, body ornament (cross-body chain), pendant and costume consist of cloth-belt, a pair of cloth in front of the body, and a pair of cloth on the side of the body. Also, the royal slippers which were practically used in late Ayutthaya. An increasing number of attires on the Buddha could be affected by values in Ayutthaya society.

The attires and its decoration might be unable to clearly determine age of the crowned Buddha but it was useful for noticing the development. The important thing used to determine age and development was an innovation of material and process of making the attires on the Buddha that showed more arranged ornament patterns.

งานวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะรูปแบบและแนวการประดับเครื่องทรงจากหลักฐานที่ปรากฏบนพระพุทธรูปทรงเครื่องอย่างใหญ่ในศิลปะอยุธยาตอนปลาย ที่ประดิษฐานในวัดและจัดแสดงในพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติในการดูแลของกรมศิลปากร

จากการศึกษาแนวการประดับเครื่องทรงศิลปะอยุธยาตอนปลายผ่านงานประดับเครื่องทรงพระพุทธรูปทรงเครื่องอย่างใหญ่ที่เป็นประติมากรรมลอยตัวเพื่อศึกษาแนวประดับเพิ่มเติม พบว่ารูปแบบเครื่องทรงบนพระพุทธรูปมีแรงบันดาลใจสำคัญด้านรูปแบบตกทอดจากเครื่องทรงในวัฒนธรรมไทยที่แลกรับปรับใช้จากวัฒนธรรมต่างๆ จนก่อให้เกิดแบบแผนการประดับที่เรียกว่าแบบประเพณี พบได้ในงานจิตรกรรมศิลปะอยุธยาตอนปลาย ได้แก่ มงกุฎทรงสูง กุณฑล กรรเจียกจอนหู กรองศอ สังวาล ทับทรวง และงานประดับผ้านุ่ง รัดประคด ชายไหว ชายแครง เป็นต้น รวมถึง ฉลองพระบาท ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากรูปแบบรองเท้าที่มีการใช้งานจริง การเพิ่มจำนวนเครื่องทรงอาจมาจากค่านิยมที่เกิดขึ้นในสังคมอยุธยา

เครื่องทรงและแนวการประดับอาจไม่สามารถกำหนดอายุพระพุทธรูปได้อย่างชัดเจน แต่สามารถนำมาใช้ประโยชน์ในการตั้งข้อสังเกตเรื่องลำดับพัฒนาการ ส่วนสำคัญที่สามารถใช้ในการศึกษาการจัดลำดับพัฒนาการและการกำหนดอายุ คือ ความก้าวหน้าของวัสดุและกรรมวิธีการสร้างเครื่องทรงบนพระพุทธรูปที่แสดงให้เห็นแนวการประดับที่มีระเบียบแบบแผนมากขึ้น
