A Study of Siremorn Ounhatub’s Works in Ecocriticism

Abstract

This thesis aimed to investigate the works of Siremorn Ounhatub by adopting ecocriticism to criticize nature writings, both fiction and non-fiction. The study focused on ecological concepts, roles and spiritualities of women, and also focused on the writing techniques adopted to construct ecological consciousness. The study found that the works of Siremorn Ounhatub projected three ecological concepts which were the concept of holistic paradigm presentation, the concept of connection between natures and women, and the concept of criticizing social institutes, habits, and human beings.

By investigating three fictions, the result revealed that the female protagonist in each story performed ecological role and spirituality. In “Rao King Kap Wong Kleep Nien Krip”, the short story, the female character performed the ecological role and spirituality by connecting nature with herself, especially in feelings and collective experiences. In “Lam Nao Pa", the novel, the female character declined the rule and social value, but connected herself with nature, especially in the way of male and human domination. Besides, the connection emancipated both women and nature. Lastly, in “Jai Duang Rao”, the novel, the female character treated natures as the living things who were her ancestors and relatives. It caused the spirituality to merge with the natures. In the part of writing techniques, the fictions presented the idea of nature and ecological aspect and constructed ecological consciousness through literary elements, i.e., narrations, characters, plots, and settings. Furthermore, there were words expressing beauty and importance of nature. While figures of speech were used to project the vitality of nature and character's feeling. The techniques convinced the reader to perceive the value and the importance of nature.

By investigating 11 non-fictions, the result revealed that the woman in the non-fictions who was the author performed the ecological role and spirituality in two main issues. Firstly, the unity under the nature's shade was caused by ecological self-realization. It led to the habit relating to the nature and the author’s role towards mindfulness of society. Secondly, the life relied on the nature and protecting the environment. The author presented the health maintenance by using natural therapy. It was the way that helped the author to realize that human was originated by nature, and led to the respectful attitude towards nature. In the part of writing techniques, the non-fictions were significant in word uses and figures of speech. The techniques pointed out the environmental problems and performed the self-values of nature. It constructed the new perception of nature and peaceful living with each other in ecological society by using antonym and repetition to emphasize the value of nature and identify the bad point of development. Moreover, the figure of speech projected vitality of nature, severity of environmental problem, and also criticized the human behaviors.

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษางานเขียนของ ศิเรมอร อุณหธูป ในแนวทางการวิจารณ์วรรณกรรมเชิงนิเวศจากงานเขียนบันเทิงคดีและสารคดีที่มีเนื้อหานำเสนอเรื่องธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม โดยมุ่งศึกษาที่แนวคิดเชิงนิเวศ บทบาทและจิตวิญญาณเชิงนิเวศของผู้หญิง และกลวิธีการประพันธ์ที่ใช้สร้างจิตสำนึกเชิงนิเวศ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า งานเขียนของศิเรมอร อุณหธูปปรากฏแนวคิดเชิงนิเวศ 3 แนวคิด คือ แนวคิดที่แสดงกระบวนทัศน์แบบองค์รวม แนวคิดที่แสดงการเชื่อมโยงธรรมชาติกับผู้หญิง และแนวคิดที่แสดงการวิพากษ์วิจารณ์สถาบันทางสังคม วิถีชีวิตและความเป็นมนุษย์

จากการศึกษางานเขียนบันเทิงคดีจำนวน 3 เรื่อง พบว่า ตัวละครเอกหญิงในแต่ละเรื่องได้แสดงบทบาทและจิตวิญญาณเชิงนิเวศของผู้หญิง ดังนี้ เรื่องสั้น “ราวกิ่งกับวงกลีบเนียนกริบ” ตัวละครหญิงแสดงบทบาทและจิตวิญญาณเชิงนิเวศผ่านการเชื่อมโยงธรรมชาติกับตนเองในแง่ของความรู้สึกและประสบการณ์ที่มีร่วมกัน นวนิยายเรื่อง “ลำเนาป่า” ตัวละครหญิงปฏิเสธต่อกฎเกณฑ์ ค่านิยมของสังคมและเชื่อมโยงผู้หญิงกับธรรมชาติในแง่ของการถูกครอบงำจากผู้ชายและมนุษย์ เพื่อนำไปสู่การปลดปล่อยทั้งผู้หญิงและธรรมชาติ และนวนิยายเรื่อง “ใจดวงร้าว” ตัวละครหญิงมองธรรมชาติว่ามีชีวิตในฐานะบรรพบุรุษและญาติพี่น้องของตนนำไปสู่การหลอมรวมจิตวิญญาณกับธรรมชาติ ด้านกลวิธีการประพันธ์ งานเขียนบันเทิงคดีนำเสนอความคิดเรื่องธรรมชาติและประเด็นทางด้านนิเวศวิทยาเพื่อสร้างจิตสำนึกเชิงนิเวศผ่านองค์ประกอบของวรรณกรรม ได้แก่ การเล่าเรื่อง ตัวละคร โครงเรื่อง และฉาก นอกจากนี้ ยังมีการใช้คำที่เแสดงถึงความงามและความสำคัญของธรรมชาติ และใช้ภาพพจน์แสดงความมีชีวิตของธรรมชาติ อารมณ์ความรู้สึกของตัวละครเพื่อโน้มน้าวให้ผู้อ่านเห็นคุณค่าและความสำคัญของธรรมชาติ

การศึกษางานเขียนสารคดีจำนวน 11 เรื่อง พบว่า ผู้หญิงในงานสารคดีหรือผู้เขียนได้แสดงบทบาทและจิตวิญญาณเชิงนิเวศใน 2 ประเด็นหลักคือ ประเด็นแรก ความเป็นหนึ่งเดียวภายใต้ร่มเงาธรรมชาติ เกิดจากการประจักษ์แจ้งในตัวตนเชิงนิเวศนำไปสู่วิถีชีวิตที่สอดคล้องกับธรรมชาติและบทบาทนักเขียนที่มีสำนึกต่อสังคม ประเด็นที่สอง ชีวิตที่พึ่งพาธรรมชาติและการรักษาสิ่งแวดล้อม ผู้เขียนนำเสนอการรักษาสุขภาพด้วยธรรมชาติบำบัดซึ่งเป็นวิธีที่ทำให้ผู้เขียนเกิดความตระหนักว่ามนุษย์เกิดจากธรรมชาติและนำไปสู่ท่าทีที่ปฏิบัติต่อธรรมชาติด้วยความนอบน้อม ด้านกลวิธีการประพันธ์ งานเขียนสารคดีมีจุดเด่นที่การใช้คำและภาพพจน์แสดงปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมและนำเสนอคุณค่าในตัวเองของธรรมชาติเพื่อสร้างมุมมองใหม่ต่อธรรมชาติและการอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างสงบสุขในสังคมนิเวศ โดยใช้คำที่มีความหมายตรงข้ามหรือขัดแย้งกันและซ้ำคำเพื่อเน้นคุณค่าของธรรมชาติและชี้ให้เห็นผลเสียของการพัฒนา และใช้ภาพพจน์แสดงความมีชีวิตของธรรมชาติ ความรุนแรงของปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อม และวิพากษ์วิจารณ์การกระทำของมนุษย์
