Artistic Styles and Motifs in Illuminating Manuscripts from Late Ayudhaya to Early Ratanakosin Period

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to find the unique characteristics of artistic styles and motifs that can be used to define the age of Thai Illuminated manuscripts from late Ayudhaya to early Rattanakosin. The study comprises murals from more than 70 illuminated manuscripts of this period kept in domestic and international libraries and museums.

The research process starts with collecting the murals, examining the artistic styles and motifs, including composition, color, technique, and elements: animals, foliage, landscape, architecture, figures, textiles, patterns, and borders except initials, then comparing the styles with the coeval arts to observe changes and style development as well as the source of art influences from overseas, which are then verified with the historical context, and subsequently, concluding the specific characteristics that can be used as a tool to date the manuscripts. The additional cases of dating the manuscripts by using the derived tool are included afterwards in order to check on the probability and accuracy.

The results of this research show that an overview of art development and styles in Thai illuminated manuscripts in conjunction with the unique characteristics found in each period of time can be used as a tool to date the manuscripts. By using such criteria, the manuscripts can be classified into 3 groups based upon their dating; the late Ayudhaya period, the In-between period that ranges from the late Ayudhaya to Thonburi until the beginning of early Rattanakosin and the early Rattanakosin period. The artistic styles and motifs are, furthermore, a reflection of the state of affairs, social environments, and foreign relationships of a certain period of time.

การศึกษารูปแบบศิลปกรรมและลวดลายในสมุดภาพสมัยอยุธยาตอนปลายถึงรัตนโกสินทร์ตอนต้นมีจุดประสงค์เพื่อหารูปแบบเฉพาะที่สามารถนำมาใช้เป็นเครื่องมือในการกำหนดอายุสมุดภาพโดยใช้หลักฐานที่รวบรวมจากพิพิธภัณฑ์และห้องสมุดทั้งภายในประเทศและต่างประเทศจำนวนมากกว่า 70 เล่มนำมาวิเคราะห์รูปแบบและลวดลายเปรียบเทียบกับงานศิลปกรรมร่วมสมัยเดียวกันเพื่อศึกษาพัฒนาการความเปลี่ยนแปลง และอิทธิพลทางด้านรูปแบบที่รับมาจากศิลปะอื่นพร้อมกับหาเหตุที่มาของความเปลี่ยนแปลงแล้วนำมาตรวจสอบกับหลักฐานทางประวัติศาสตร์อีกทางหนึ่งเพื่อให้ได้มาซึ่งลักษณะเฉพาะที่จะสามารถนำมาใช้ในการกำหนดอายุสมุดภาพได้และเมื่อได้เครื่องมือดังกล่าวแล้วจึงนำไปใช้ในการวิเคราะห์ประเด็นการกำหนดอายุเพื่อตรวจสอบความเป็นไปได้และความถูกต้องอีกครั้งหนึ่ง

ผลการศึกษาพบว่าความเปลี่ยนแปลงทางด้านรูปแบบโดยภาพรวมที่พบในสมุดภาพมีความสอดคล้องกับงานศิลปกรรมและบริบททางประวัติศาสตร์ร่วมสมัยเดียวกันผนวกกับรูปแบบและลวดลายบางประการที่เป็นลักษณะเฉพาะตัวซึ่งพบจำเพาะแต่ในงานสมุดภาพไม่ปรากฏในงานศิลปกรรมอื่นเป็นเครื่องมือสำคัญที่สามารถนำมาใช้ในการกำหนดอายุสมุดภาพได้

จากรูปแบบศิลปกรรมและลวดลายสามารถจำแนกกลุ่มอายุสมุดภาพออกเป็น 3 กลุ่มคือ สมุดภาพที่สร้างขึ้นในสมัยอยุธยาตอนปลาย สมุดภาพที่สร้างขึ้นในช่วงรอยต่อระหว่างอยุธยาตอนปลาย ธนบุรีต่อเนื่องถึงต้นกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ และสมุดภาพที่สร้างขึ้นในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ตอนต้น นอกจากนี้รูปแบบศิลปกรรมและลวดลายในสมุดภาพยังสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงสภาพบ้านเมือง สังคม และความสัมพันธ์กับอาณาจักรภายนอกไปในเวลาเดียวกัน
