Strategies for Organizing a Biennale Art Festival: A Case Study of the Biennale of Sydney

Abstract

Art festivals are considered crucial platforms in the global art scene, playing a vital role in Art festivals are considered crucial platforms in the global art scene, playing a vital role in driving and developing various aspects of art. These festivals provide spaces for artists to present their new creative works, reach large audiences, and gain recognition and acceptance within the art community. Moreover, they serve as forums for exchanging knowledge, ideas, and perspectives among artists from different regions, fostering cross-cultural learning and the development of artistic potential.

This research aims to 1) analyze the content and concepts of the Biennale of Sydney and 2) study the management system of the Biennale of Sydney. The researcher employed a qualitative methodology by collecting data from documentary research and statistical data through the Biennale's online archive, as well as conducting a field study at the 24th Biennale of Sydney in March 2024 for 14 days.

The findings reveal that the Biennale of Sydney's approach to selecting content, concepts, and the nature of its exhibitions focuses on advancing contemporary art rather than organizing a festival for commercial purposes. This focus transforms it into a social event that receives extensive cooperation from local communities and generous financial support from both public and private organizations. In terms of management, the Biennale of Sydney has a flexible organizational structure that can effectively handle changing situations. It has a clear strategy for defining the chain of command, position levels, and span of control, as well as coherently grouping employees in each department.

The results of this study can be applied as guidelines for organizing art biennales in Thailand, particularly in determining concepts, selecting artists and curators, and establishing an organizational management system that aligns with the current context of the contemporary art scene.

เทศกาลศิลปะถือเป็นเวทีสำคัญของวงการศิลปะระดับโลกที่มีบทบาทในการขับเคลื่อนและพัฒนาศิลปะในหลากหลายแง่มุม เทศกาลศิลปะเปิดพื้นที่ให้ศิลปินได้นำเสนอผลงานสร้างสรรค์ใหม่ ๆ เข้าถึงกลุ่มผู้ชมจำนวนมาก สร้างการรับรู้และยอมรับในแวดวงศิลปะ นอกจากนี้ยังเป็นเวทีในการแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้ แนวคิด และมุมมองระหว่างศิลปินจากต่างถิ่น ก่อให้เกิดการเรียนรู้ข้ามวัฒนธรรมและการพัฒนาศักยภาพของงานศิลปะ

งานวิจัยฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) วิเคราะห์เนื้อหาและแนวความคิดของเทศกาลศิลปะเบียนนาเล่ซิดนีย์ (Biennale of Sydney) และ 2) ศึกษาระบบการบริหารและการจัดการเทศกาลศิลปะเบียนนาเล่ซิดนีย์ ผู้วิจัยใช้วิธีการศึกษาเชิงคุณภาพ โดยเก็บข้อมูลจากการศึกษาเอกสารและข้อมูลทางสถิติผ่านคลังข้อมูลออนไลน์ของเทศกาล รวมทั้งการเดินทางไปศึกษาดูงานเทศกาลศิลปะเบียนนาเล่ซิดนีย์ครั้งที่ 24 ในเดือนมีนาคม พ.ศ. 2567 เป็นเวลา 14 วัน

ผลการศึกษาพบว่า แนวทางการคัดเลือกเนื้อหา แนวความคิด และลักษณะของการจัดแสดงนิทรรศการของเทศกาลเบียนนาเล่ซิดนีย์ มุ่งความสนใจไปที่ความก้าวหน้าของศิลปะร่วมสมัยมากกว่าการจัดเทศกาลศิลปะในเชิงพาณิชย์ จึงทำให้เป็นกิจกรรมทางสังคมที่ได้รับความร่วมมือจากประชาชนในท้องถิ่น และได้รับความร่วมมือในการสนับสนุนงบประมาณจากองค์กรทั้งภาครัฐและเอกชน ส่วนด้านการบริหารจัดการ เทศกาลเบียนนาเล่ซิดนีย์มีโครงสร้างองค์กรที่ยืดหยุ่น สามารถรับมือกับสถานการณ์ที่เปลี่ยนแปลงได้เป็นอย่างดี โดยมีการวางกลยุทธ์ในการกำหนดสายการบังคับบัญชา ระดับตำแหน่ง และขนาดการควบคุมอย่างชัดเจน รวมถึงการจัดกลุ่มพนักงานในแต่ละฝ่ายอย่างเป็นเอกภาพ

ผลการศึกษาครั้งนี้สามารถนำไปประยุกต์ใช้เป็นแนวทางในการจัดทำเทศกาลศิลปะเบียนนาเล่ในประเทศไทย ทั้งในแง่ของการกำหนดแนวความคิด การคัดเลือกศิลปินและภัณฑารักษ์ รวมถึงการวางระบบการบริหารจัดการองค์กรให้สอดคล้องกับบริบทของวงการศิลปะร่วมสมัยในปัจจุบัน
