OPAL'S WORLD

Abstract

The aim of this research project is to analyse the creator’s own development of knowledge with regard to sexuality and gender that influences his art forms. It emphasizes factors that influences the styles of his works which can be divided into three periods. Clearly, his oeuvre is influenced by the confluence between the Lanna culture, in which the creator’s background is rooted, and the pop culture, especially in the 1990s, which was disseminated across the globe through television programs, videos and print media. These cultural impacts have constructed and shaped the creator’s self-identity and creativity. The information with regard to this development of self-knowledge is accumulated to create the art work under the theme “Opal’s World”.

The creative research project confirms the hypothesis that the study and the creation of works of visual arts rooted in the culture and tradition of Lanna will not only help to preserve and increase the value of folk arts, but also improve and modernise the form to correspond with changing lifestyles of modern people. The project studies LGBTQ+, with a particular emphasis on gay and homosexuality. The installation piece simulates human cells, the smallest units that store memories and identities of all living organisms and human beings. The three main cell structures represent the three stages of the researcher’s creation. Firstly, cell membrane signifies the present artistic identity expressed though Lanna pop paintings. The second component, cytoplasm, symbolises the past when the researcher had to conceal his own gender identity. Lastly, nucleus embodies childhood, a period when he did not yet learn to distinguish people along sexual and gender lines and when he painted black-white cartoon characters on papers.

This creative research project contributes to creation and preservation of contemporary Thai arts originating from the Lanna culture. Also, it promotes the social acceptance of people whose gender identities deviate from accepted social norms. Arts serve as a channel to express thoughts as well as inspiration for young artists who are courageous enough to articulate their own gender through art works.

วัตถุประสงค์ของโครงการวิจัยสร้างสรรค์ผลงานครั้งนี้คือการสังเคราะห์องค์ความรู้เรื่องเพศสภาพและเพศวิถีที่ส่งผลต่อรูปแบบของการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานศิลปะของผู้สร้างสรรค์ เป็นการเน้นศึกษาอิทธิพลที่ส่งผลต่ออัตลักษณ์การสร้างสรรค์ผลงานของผู้สร้างสรรค์ที่แตกต่างกัน 3 ยุค โดยมีอิทธิพลจากวัฒนธรรมคู่ขนาน คือ วัฒนธรรมพื้นบ้านล้านนาที่เป็นวัฒนธรรมรากเหง้าของผู้สร้างสรรค์ กับวัฒนธรรมป๊อปในยุค 90 ที่เผยแพร่เข้ามาพร้อมกับสื่อโทรทัศน์, วิดีทัศน์และสิ่งพิมพ์ต่างๆ ในแต่ละช่วงวัย ที่ส่งผลต่อบุคลิกภาพและการสร้างสรรค์ผลงาน แล้วจึงนำเอาข้อมูลที่ได้มาประกอบสร้างสรรค์เป็นผลงานในหัวข้อ “โลกของโอปอ”

การวิจัยสร้างสรรค์ในครั้งนี้ได้ผลงานที่สอดคล้องกับสมมติฐานการวิจัยและสร้างสรรค์ที่ว่าการศึกษาและสร้างสรรค์งานศิลปกรรมที่มีรากเหง้าจากศิลปวัฒนธรรมล้านนาจะเป็นการต่อยอดคุณค่าของศิลปะแนวพื้นบ้านให้ยังคงอยู่ไม่จางหาย พร้อมกับทั้งยังพัฒนารูปแบบให้มีความร่วมสมัยสอดคล้องกับชีวิตของคนในยุคปัจจุบัน ด้วยเนื้อหาเรื่องกลุ่มความหลากหลายทางเพศที่เป็นประเด็นน่าสนใจในยุคปัจจุบัน โดยเน้นศึกษาเรื่องเกี่ยวกับเพศ “เกย์” นำเสนอผ่านงานจิตรกรรมรูปแบบจัดวาง (Painting Installation) ที่ได้จำลองเอารูปแบบเชิงกายภาพของเซลล์สัตว์ซึ่งเป็นหน่วยที่เล็กที่สุดที่กักเก็บความทรงจำและอัตลักษณ์ของสิ่งมีชีวิต เปรียบเสมือนช่วงเวลาทั้ง 3 ช่วงของผู้วิจัยที่ได้หยิบยกเอามาสร้างสรรค์ ได้แก่ ชั้นที่ 1) cell membrane แทนอัตลักษณ์ปัจจุบัน ใช้รูปแบบจิตรกรรมป๊อปล้านนา 2) cytoplasm แทนตัวตนในอดีตที่ต้องปกปิดเพศวิถีของตนเองต่อสังคม ใช้รูปแบบจิตรกรรมพื้นบ้านล้านนา และชั้นสุดท้าย 3) nucleus แทนวัยเด็กที่ไม่แบ่งแยกเพศใดๆ ใช้รูปแบบภาพวาดขาว-ดำเลียนแบบการวาดการ์ตูนบนหน้ากระดาษ

การวิจัยและสร้างสรรค์ในครั้งนี้ทำให้ได้องค์ความรู้ที่เป็นประโยชน์คือ การสร้างสรรค์เชิงอนุรักษ์ศิลปะไทยร่วมสมัยที่มีต้นกำเนิดจากวัฒนธรรมล้านนา และการยอมรับการอยู่ร่วมกันของเพศที่หลากหลายในสังคม โดยมีสื่อศิลปะเป็นตัวกลางในการแสดงออกทางความคิด ทั้งยังสามารถสร้างแรงบันดาลใจให้ศิลปินรุ่นใหม่กล้าที่จะหยิบยกเอาประเด็นเรื่องเพศของตนเองนำเสนอในผลงานศิลปะมากขึ้น
