Styles and Concepts of Commemorative Fans (Phat Sangket) in the reign of King Rama V to King Rama IX

Abstract

The objective of this research was to study patterns and concept of designs of the commemorative fans in the reign of King Rama V to King Rama IX used by the Kings, royalties, and noble family members (who were not royalties). The researcher gathered the commemorative fans from the reign of King Rama V to King Rama IX of which designs and patterns characterized the work of one important artist, H.R.H. Prince Narisara Nuwattiwong, and other contemporary artists whose names were anonymous. Then, the researcher was able to categorize the commemorative fans into groups, which are commemorative fans decorated with the Kings’ signatures, the royalties’ and nobilities’ initials, and those with figures and symbols.

The research indicates that the patterns and concept of designs of the commemorative fans from the two groups are similar. The designs were consecutively developed by several influences such as;

1. Roles and lifestyles of the direct owners (the patterns appearing on the fan were always related to the owners)

2. The artists (the pattern on fans were greatly influenced by the artists’ preference)

3. International relations and technology imported in Rattanakosin period (It was found that the commemorative fans from a certain period had western artistic influences and were produced by new technology such as lithography which created a different style of patterns).

The development of the patterns and designs of the commemorative fans in each categorization i.e., King, royalties and noble family members reflects different influences from different periods. The importance of a commemorative fan was to be a memorial and to gain merit to its owner, therefore we always see a relation between the artistic styles and the owner’s life in many aspects.

งานวิจัยเรื่องนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษารูปแบบและแนวคิดในการออกแบบพัดสังเค็ด ในรัชกาลที่ 5 - รัชกาลที่ 9 ระหว่างกลุ่มพัดสังเค็ดสำหรับพระมหากษัตริย์ รวมถึงพระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ และกลุ่มพัดสังเค็ดสำหรับผู้ที่ได้รับตำแหน่งในราชสำนัก (ผู้ที่ไม่ใช่เชื้อพระวงศ์) ผู้วิจัยทำการรวบรวมรูปแบบพัดสังเค็ดในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 - รัชกาลที่ 9 ที่มีหลักฐานสามารถระบุถึงลักษณะการออกแบบลวดลาย โดยปรากฏงานของช่างคนสำคัญ คือ สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ เจ้าฟ้ากรมพระยานริศรานุวัดติวงศ์ และงานของช่างท่านอื่นไม่ปรากฏชื่อที่ร่วมสมัยกัน เมื่อรวบรวมหลักฐานพัดสังเค็ดแล้วจึงใช้ประเภทของการออกแบบลวดลายเป็นเกณฑ์ในการจำแนกกลุ่ม สามารถจัดกลุ่มได้เป็นพัดสังเค็ดที่ใช้อักษรย่อพระปรมาภิไธย พระนาม หรือนาม และกลุ่มพัดสังเค็ดที่ใช้รูปภาพสัญลักษณ์

ผลของการวิจัยพบว่ารูปแบบและแนวคิดในการออกแบบพัดสังเค็ดทั้งสองกลุ่มเป็นไปในทิศทางเดียวกัน โดยการออกแบบพัดสังเค็ดมีพัฒนาการที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามลำดับ ซึ่งมีความสอดคล้องกับปัจจัยต่างๆ เช่น

1. ปัจจัยที่สัมพันธ์กับชีวิต และบทบาททางสังคมของเจ้าของพัดโดยตรง ด้วยเหตุที่ลวดลายที่ปรากฏบนพัดจะมีความเชื่อมโยงกับเจ้าของพัดเสมอ

2. ปัจจัยที่สัมพันธ์กับตัวช่าง เนื่องจากรสนิยมของช่างเป็นส่วนสำคัญในออกแบบลวดลายบนพัดสังเค็ด

3. ปัจจัยที่สัมพันธ์กับการติดต่อกับต่างประเทศ และการนำเทคโนโลยีใหม่เข้ามาในแผ่นดินรัตนโกสินทร์ ผู้วิจัยพบว่าพัดยุคหนึ่งมีรูปแบบที่เปลี่ยนไปเป็นงานที่มีอิทธิพลทางตะวันตก และกรรมวิธีการผลิตใหม่ที่เข้ามา เช่นการพิมพ์หิน ทำให้เกิดลวดลายที่ต่างไปจากเดิม

พัฒนาการของพัดสังเค็ดที่ผู้วิจัยนำมาศึกษา ทำให้เห็นถึงการเปลี่ยนแปลงของรูปแบบและแนวคิดในการออกแบบพัดสังเค็ดแต่ละช่วงเวลา ทั้งในกลุ่มพัดสังเค็ดสำหรับพระมหากษัตริย์ รวมถึงพระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ และกลุ่มพัดสังเค็ดสำหรับผู้ที่ได้รับตำแหน่งในราชสำนัก (ผู้ที่ไม่ใช่เชื้อพระวงศ์) ทั้งนี้เพราะนัยยะสำคัญของการถวายพัดสังเค็ด คือ เพื่อระลึกถึง และเพื่อกุศลแก่เจ้าของพัด จึงเห็นการที่สร้างสรรค์ลวดลายที่สัมพันธ์กับเจ้าของพัดในมิติต่างๆ เป็นต้น
