The Composition in Sacred Jazz Style : Case Study of "Jazz Mass" by Ike Sturm

Abstract

This research aims to study and analyze jazz compositions for worship from the “Jazz Mass” by Ike Sturm which consist of 7 songs, Kyrie, Gloria, Just as I am, Sanctus, Our Father, Agnus Dei, and Shine.

The analysis reveals that concepts, techniques and important elements of composing the worship songs in “Jazz Mass” by Ike Sturm are 1) Use of mode to create feeling of Brightness and Darkness 2) Use of major7#11 chord 3) Use of repetition as background 4) Key changes and modulations 5) Use of strings to create various atmospheric background 6) Sudden change of ensemble type 7) Improvisation 8) Use of pedal Point. The researcher synthesized the results of the analysis to compose three songs which are Psalm of Praise, Trab Wan Nan and Job’s Faith

การวิจัยครั้งนี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาค้นคว้าเทคนิคและวิเคราะห์บทเพลงแจ๊สเพื่อ การนมัสการจากผลงานชุด แจ๊สแมสส์ ของไอก์ สเติร์ม ซึ่งประกอบไปด้วย เพลง Kyrie เพลง Gloria เพลง Just as I am เพลง Sanctus เพลง Our Father เพลง Agnus Dei และเพลง Shine รวมทั้งสิ้น 7 เพลง

ผลการวิเคราะห์พบว่า แนวคิด เทคนิค หรือองค์ประกอบสำคัญในการประพันธ์บทเพลงนมัสการรูปแบบแจ๊สจากผลงานชุด แจ๊สแมสส์ ของไอก์ สเติร์ม ได้แก่ 1) โมดเพื่อสร้างความรู้สึกสว่างและมืดหม่น 2) การใช้คอร์ด Major7# 11 3) การซ้ำทำนองเพื่อใช้ในการบรรเลงเป็นพื้นหลังของบทเพลง 4) การเปลี่ยนกุญแจเสียง 5) การใช้กลุ่มเครื่องสายในการสร้างพื้นหลังที่หลากหลายเพื่อสร้างบรรยากาศต่าง ๆ 6) การเปลี่ยนลักษณะวงอย่างรวดเร็ว 7) การใช้การบรรเลงคีตปฏิภาณ และ 8) การใช้กลุ่มโน้ตเสียงค้าง ผู้วิจัยได้นำผลการวิเคราะห์ไปสังเคราะห์เป็นแนวคิดในการประพันธ์เพลง 3 เพลงได้แก่ Psalm of Praise ตราบวันนั้น และJob’s Faith
